MY DO-OVER WEDDING REGISTRY
Con tantas bodas de gente querida y pensando que este año David y yo cumplimos 6 (¡SEIS!) años de casados, he tenido las listas de boda en la cabeza estos días.
With so many weddings going on and realizing that David and I will be married 6 (six!) years this July, wedding registries have been on my mind lately.
Cuando nos comprometemos y armamos nuestra lista de bodas hay muchas cosas que creemos que son necesarias que en verdad no lo son y muchas cosas no tan glamorosas que ignoramos pero que son más útiles y disfrutables de lo que pensamos. A esto agregamos que casi siempre las que nos aconsejan son nuestras mamás, tías y abuelas, que aunque tengan las mejores intenciones son (sin ofender) ¡de otra generación!
When we get engaged and plan our wedding registry, there are many things we think are necessary that really aren’t, and many not-so-glamorous but useful and enjoyable things that we ignore. On top of this, some of our main advisors in the matter are our moms, aunts and grandmas, who (no offense) are from another generation!
Así que les comparto lo que yo pondría en mi lista de bodas hoy por hoy, que sin ser ninguna autoridad, estos 6 años de casada y de pasar por 3 departamentos, 2 países, 1 casa y 1 bebé me han dejado algunos tips.
So today I’m sharing what I would include in my wedding registry nowadays. I’m no expert, but these 6 years of marriage and going through 3 apartments, 2 countries, 1 house and 1 baby have left me with a few ideas.

Estas 8 cosas no faltarían en mi segunda lista de bodas si tuviera la oportunidad:
SABANAS
Blancas, sencillas y con muchos, muchos hilos. Nos encanta tener lindos muebles y platos, pero dormir en sábanas lisas, frescas y deliciosas es la mejor inversión. Además, cuando tengas un bebé recién nacido y los momentos en tu cama sean contados, será espectacular regresar a una cama tipo hotel para descansar un poquito. En nuestra lista de bodas incluimos varios sets de sábanas que seguimos disfrutando estos primeros años de matrimonio.
SHEETS
White, simple and with a high thread count. We all love having nice furniture and dinnerware, but sleeping in smooth, fresh, delicious sheets is the best investment ever. And when you have a baby (if you do) and bedtime seems scarce, it will be amazing to go back to a hotel-like bed for some shut-eye. We included a few sets of white linens in our registry that we are still enjoying during these first years of marriage.
TOALLAS
Grandes, medianas y chiquitas, del color que quieras. Parece mentira pero las toallas son una inversión $$ y a veces las opciones son muy limitadas. Al igual que las sábanas, recomiendo poner varias en la lista de bodas para ir usándolas poco a poco.
TOWELS
Big, medium, and small, in whatever color you like. It sounds irrelevant but towels are a big investment and they must be replaced frequently. As with linens, I recommend to register for quite a few and use them little by little.
SET DE CUCHILLOS
Hay algunas supersticiones sobre regalar cuchillos y tijeras que “rompen la amistad”, pero ha sido uno de los mejores regalos de bodas que nos dieron y reporto que seguimos siendo muy amigos de Stephie y toda su familia. Es un regalo que si te gusta cocinar lo aprecias muchísimo y si no te gusta cocinar lo apreciarás aún más porque picar con un buen cuchillo hace todo mucho más agradable.
KNIFE SET
There are some superstitions that gifting knives and scissors «cuts through friendships», but this has been one of the best wedding gifts we got and I’m happy to report that we are still very close friends with Stephie and her whole family. If you love to cook you will love this gift, and if you don’t, you will love it even more because chopping with a good knife makes everything more enjoyable.
VASOS, COPAS, TAZAS Y… STEMLESS WINE GLASSES
Muchas veces los recién casados se equipan con mil tipos de copas, vasos y tazas, pero de las incorrectas. Yo tengo copas de vino tinto, blanco, champagne, gin, martini, cognac… pero vienen mis amigas a tomar té y no tengo mugs para servirles una sencilla taza de té. Equípate con copas útiles, olvídate de las rebuscadas que nunca vas a usar y si eres práctica y solo quieres un tipo, compra las copas de vino sin tallo (stemless wine glasses) que son lo más versátil del mundo porque las puedes usar para cualquier bebida desde vino en plan informal hasta agua en una cena fancy.
GLASSES, CUPS, AND STEMLESS WINE GLASSES
Many times newlyweds will get all kinds of drinkware, and maybe the wrong kinds. We own red wine, white wine, champagne, gin, martini, and cognac glasses… but my friends will show up for a simple cup of tea and I won’t have any mugs! Equip your bar with useful glasses, forget the elaborate, over-the-top ones, and if you only pick one kind, register for stemless wine glasses, which are so versatile you can use them on many occasions with different drinks.
ALFOMBRA
Como decía en mi artículo de tips para disfrutar más tu sala (puedes leerlo aquí), la alfombra es super importante para crear un ambiente acogedor y útil. Si registras tu lista de bodas en un lugar donde puedes escoger la alfombra que te guste, no dudes en hacerlo ya que además es una inversión decorativa que puede que después no puedan hacer.
RUG
Like I said in my blog post about making your living room more enjoyable (you can read it here), a living room rug helps create a cosy and livable ambiance. If you like a rug where you are registered, don’t hesitate to get one, since it’s also a decorative investment you might not be able to make later on.
CARRITO DE BAR
Ya sea que vayan a vivir en un mini departamento o en una mega casa, siempre hay espacio para (y necesidad de) un carrito de bar. Es útil porque no tienes que destinar espacio valioso de tu cocina para guardar licores y es decorativo porque lo puedes style de muchas maneras. En mi casa el carrito de bar también hace de consola de bienvenida para llaves y demás ya que todavía no tenemos una. Y además, aunque mucha gente dice que después lo tienes que guardar cuando tengas bebés, nosotros no hemos tenido ningún problema, Sofía ha aprendido que no se juega con él y a distinguir entre vino y champagne (ja).
BAR CART
Whether you are going to live in a tiny apartment or a big house, there is always room (and need) for a bar cart. It’s useful because you don’t have to use up valuable kitchen space to store liquor and barware, and decorative because you can style it many ways. In our house, the bar cart is also where we have our catch-all at the entrance. Even though many people say you have to put bar carts away when you have babies, we haven’t had any problems. Sofía has learned that she can’t play with it and now knows her wine from her champagne (ha!).
UN ELECTRODOMESTICO TOP
No soy fan de llenarme de electrodomésticos y mucho menos de tenerlos a la vista en la cocina, pero creo que todas las casas tienen ese electrodoméstico que se usa todos los días, entonces amerita que sea muy bueno y bonito si es posible. Piensa cuál es el tuyo y ponlo en tu lista de bodas, ya sea tu cafetera, un horno de pan, un lavavajillas o en mi caso un panini grill que todavía uso todos los días como tostadora, sanduchera, wafflera y hasta sartén eléctrico. Me lo regaló mi amiga Liesel y sigue intacto, les dejo el link!
A NICE APPLIANCE
I’m not a big fan of filling up the kitchen with useless appliances, much less having them all on the countertop, but I think all homes have their one go-to appliance that they love and use every day, so it should be excellent and easy on the eyes. Think about your appliance of choice and register for it, whether it be your coffeemaker, a toaster oven, or in my case this panini grill that I use every day as a toaster, sandwich/panini/waffle-maker and even grill on it. I got it from my friend Liesel and it is still spotless, here’s the link for it.
FUENTES PARA SERVIR CON PERSONALIDAD
Ya sea para variar tus comidas del día a día o para invitar a tus amigos a comer hamburguesas, un regalo que he usado mucho todos estos años son las fuentes de servir. Vale la pena tener de diferentes tamaños, colores y materiales porque las puedes usar para servir desde una cena tradicional de carne, guarnición y ensalada hasta para servir mil toppings para una noche de tacos.
SERVEWARE WITH PERSONALITY
Wether to refresh your daily eats or to have friends over, this is a gift I’ve used so much all these years. It’s worth it to get different sizes, colors and materials, so that you have a variety to serve from a traditional dinner to many toppings on a taco night.

UNA VAJILLA PARA HEREDAR A TU NIETA
Aunque me encantan las reliquias familiares y las vajillas bonitas, la verdad es que los jóvenes recién casados NO las necesitamos. La vajilla elegante ocupa espacio que no tenemos, no la usamos nunca y el par de veces que sí la sacamos estamos aterrados de que se rompa algo. Opta, como nosotros, por una vajilla práctica del estilo que te guste y úsala todos los días y cuando vengan invitados también.
CHINA YOUR DAUGHTER CAN INHERIT
As much as I love a good family heirloom and pretty china, the truth is newlyweds do not need it. Fancy china takes up valuable sometimes inexistant space, we never use it, and when we do, we are terrified that something will break. Choose a practical and stylish china, like we did, and use it for everyday foods and with company, too.
12 PLATOS BASE
Un regalo de matrimonio súper común que nos dan las tías queridas, pero que ¡nunca usamos! Yo tengo unos cuantos de peltre que siguen empacados, ocupando espacio por ahí. Ni cuando hago cenas formales los uso porque no caben en mi mesa, prefiero decorar con otros elementos y bueno, ¡no soy un salón de eventos!
CUBIERTOS ELEGANTES
Otro error que cometimos con nuestros regalos de matrimonio: una caja de cubiertos elegantes que siguen empacados. Mi mamá siempre dice que habrá algún momento cuando los “necesite”, pero cuando estás recién casado, pensando en préstamos, viajes, inversiones o bebés definitivamente no es el momento.
FANCY FLATWARE
Another mistake we made with our registry was this: a fancy box with fancy flatware that is still in individual wrappings. My mom always says there will be a time when I will «need» them (read: want them), but when you are recently married, thinking about loans, travel plans, investments or babies is definitely not the time.
MULTIPLES OLLAS DE FONDUE
Es delicioso reunirse a hacer un fondue con amigos, pero este popular regalo de matrimonio no es tan original como creemos. Puede que la nueva pareja termine con varias ollas de fondue que no tendrán suficientes amigos, recetas ni estómagos para disfrutar. Mejor pon en tu registro algo que te sea útil todos los días.
FONDUE POTS
I love gathering with friends around a fondue pot, but this popular wedding gift is not as original as we believe. Some new couples end up with a few fondue pots that will never see the light of day, no matter how many friends, recipes and bellies to fill you have. Instead, pick something that will be useful in your everyday life.
